Previous Evaluation by a Doctor

If you suffer from sleep apnea, seeking professional help is essential to achieving a healthy sleeping pattern and minimizing health risks. However, many victims of the disorder assume that getting evaluated by a single medical professional and getting one sleep apnea diagnosis is enough. The opinions and recommendations of different sleep apnea doctors may vary widely. Just because you’ve already received advice from one doctor doesn’t mean it’s necessarily the best approach for your situation. Dr. Mark Kleive offers no fee consultations and second opinions for people who want a personalized treatment plan for their unique circumstances.

Some sleep apnea doctors prescribe the use of CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) machines. These machines work by forcing a steady stream of air into the individual’s mouth through a mask. Although some sufferers have experienced success with wearing CPAP masks, they can be inconvenient and uncomfortable. By getting a second opinion from another sleep apnea doctor, you may receive a recommendation for a treatment that better accommodates your lifestyle.

When you see a doctor for a sleep apnea diagnosis, he or she will probably evaluate the following:

  • Your history of sleep disorders and sleep apnea symptoms
  • Your non-sleep related medical history
  • Your current level of physical fitness
  • Possible tests of your sleeping patterns through monitored periods of sleep

A sleep apnea doctor should ask plenty of questions during your evaluation, including:

  • What is the frequency and severity of your snoring?
  • Does your snoring cause others in the house to wake up?
  • Do you ever find yourself gasping for breath during the night, or waking with a rapid heart rate?
  • How many hours of sleep do you typically get at night?
  • Do you regularly feel sluggish, irritable, and fatigued throughout the day?

It’s a good idea to keep a sleep diary so you’ll have the information on hand to help formulate a sleep apnea diagnosis. Your sleeping partner may need to accompany you on your visit to the sleep apnea doctor to answer some of these questions.

Dr. Mark Kleive is a dentist who has worked with patients to find solutions for them and their lifestyles. He believes in individualized treatment plans, a no-pressure office and respect for patients and their concerns. If he believes you would benefit more from a treatment he doesn’t provide, he will personally refer you to the most qualified professional.
